A Gem in the Rough

Today, I am rough and uncut.   Many underestimate my value although I am far more rare and considered to be more precious than diamonds, my prices remain very competitive and uncontrolled.

I am sturdier than softer gems such as opals, pearls, red corals and tanzanites, and harder than most steel, with a hardness of 7 to 8 on the Mohs scale.  Still, I am not as hard as a diamond and more care must be taken to prevent me from becoming fractured.

I am the special stone for those born in the month May and  the zodiacal gem for those born under the sign of Taurus, the bull.

I have been associated with healing properties to guard against poison and venomous bites, cure epilepsy, enhance fertility, support pregnancy, cure eye disorders,  reduce eye tension and strain, cure stomach disorders, aid sleeping, and cure leprosy.

Throughout history, I have been linked with magical powers and abilities to provide protection against demoniacal possession, to increase mental powers, to provide clairvoyance, to increase mental clarity, and to strengthen love and fidelity.
